Distance: 13 km
This walk starts and ends at junction 35, Spekkelaan 2 Lisse.
Walk through one of the oldest reclaimed land areas in the Netherlands; around 1624, the last drops of water were pumped out of the Lisser Poelpolder and the island of Rooversbroek became mainland.
Initially the job was done by two mills. Later on their task was taken over by the octagonal upper mill, which stands at the lowest point of the polder. The first farms were built in the 17th century. For centuries, the polder consisted of grassland, where cows and sheep grazed. In the 20th century, a small part of it was converted into bulb land.
The Rooversbroek Polder on the edge of the Haarlemmermeer is a versatile horticultural area where summer flowers, perennials and bedding plants are grown. The greenhouses grow roses and pot plants, among other things. To the west of the Rooverbroek Polder, bordered by the Rooversbroek dike, bulb plots add colour to the landscape. After the polder, you walk via Sassenheim, past the Ruïne van Teylingen and through the countryside back to junction 35.
The route takes you over dykes, walks among cows and lets you enjoy beautiful panoramas. Good footwear is a must as some of the paths are unpaved.
