Museum De Zwarte Tulp - Exhibition "Cut for spring"

Paper cutting or clipping art is cutting shapes out of paper with scissors or a knife. Pasted on a (coloured) background, the outlines give a nice contrast. It is both a craft and a true art form. More than 20 members of the Dutch Society for Paper Cutting Art have been inspired by the (bulbous) flower and show this work in Museum De Zwarte Tulp.

The history of paper cutting goes back to the third century BC in ancient China. This art form has developed all over the world, adapting to different cultural styles. The famous modern artist Henri Matisse was also into it. In the Netherlands, cutting and carving has been practised for over four centuries. And in 1983, cutters united to form The Dutch Association for Paper Cutting with the aim of raising awareness of cutting. Today, cutters practise both the more folkloric side and contemporary subjects and techniques. The association is a platform for the leisure cutter and for the professional artist. Today, the art of cutting is increasingly well known and there is even an increase in membership. The 40-year-old association currently has more than 300 members.
