Teylingen Castle
The ruins of Teylingen Castle are a round moated castle that dominates the flat landscape.
Originally, there was only a circular wall; the donjon was added later in the thirteenth century. In addition to the present castle, there was an extensive outer bailey, which was also surrounded by a moat. In the fourteenth century, a comfortable and luxurious residence was built here.
Today, the castle consists of the still impressive round fortress (37 m in diameter) on a castle island surrounded by a wide moat. The massive residential building was also built against the wall. It is now an empty shell, but it used to have four floors, the first of which was vaulted. In the interior, the beam holes of the upper floors can still be seen.

History of Teylingen Castle
The castle, originally inhabited by the Lords of Teylingen, served to protect the Rijndijk and the road to Haarlem. The Teylingen lords were first mentioned in 1143.
The castle became a hunting lodge an a timber farm of the counts of Holland and the feudal lord was given the title of woodcutter and actually became a kind of official with the responsibility for the management.
The best-known proprietor was Jacoba of Bavaria (1433). She came from the highest noble circles but had lost her rights to the countship due to an unwanted marriage to Frank van Borsele. She died of tuberculosis in 1436.
During the Eighty Years' War, the castle was severely damaged. In 1572, during the siege of Haarlem and Leiden, Teylingen fell prey to the Spaniards and was reduced to a ruin.
In 1888, the now heavily neglected castle was handed over to the state and the management of the monument was mainly aimed at preserving it. Only since 1933 has further decay been prevented by constructive measures.
Since 1 June 2013, the ruins have been managed by the Foundation for the Management of Teylingen Castle.
